The painting Checkmate by Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch (above) captures one of the most powerful allegories of the human soul caught in spiritual battle. In the image, Satan—depicted as the “Adversary”—sits across from a young man at a chessboard. The man’s face reveals fear and despair, while Satan leans forward in confidence, convinced he has already won. The pieces on the board are arranged in such a way that it seems the young man has no options left—his king appears trapped. For centuries, this image has been interpreted as the soul locked in a losing match against the forces of evil, powerless to resist.
But there’s more to the story. Chess masters who studied the painting later declared that the game was not over—that in fact, the king still had one move left. That last, unexpected move represents the victory of Christ, the true King, who breaks every trap of the enemy and provides a way of escape when all seems lost. What Satan believes to be checkmate is in reality his defeat. The painting becomes a visual parable: the enemy may press us into corners, using deception and despair as his strategy, but God always has the final word. The King always has the last move.
Our mission is to educate those who know and those who do not yet realize they are in a battle, equip them with God’s Word, inspire them with faith, prepare them through discipline, and deploy them with courage to stand firm in spiritual warfare.
